Such an iconic place. I love walking through Seattle, feeling the drizzle on the brow. Don’t know if I’ve ever seen pikes market quiet. Too bad we didn’t have a spare moment to visit The Pink Door. A true Seattle icon.

The Walled Garden breakdown...

Garden designer Bunny Guiness describes some of the in’s and out’s of walled gardens.  Something we don’t have too much experience with here in the states.  Something about the private-ness, seclusion and mystery that allures me.  There are many great wall builders out there, if you’re interested take a look at some of Lew French’s work.

Inside Look At The Royal Tenenbaums House

I seriously love this movie.

Royal Tenenbaum is one of my favorite characters - you can hate him and love him all at once - and I love this look inside his world.

Month in a Museum?

This would be a total riot!  A month in a museum in Chicago…  Hmmm I wonder if the food would get boring?

The Interview…

As a designer, my main concern is to create a design I can walk away from, feeling complete.  I get to walk into peoples homes, lives, gardens, their special places and distill the images, ideas, words I hear, to make a good design.

What is a good design?  A place that feels like an extension of my clients, their homes, their families.  A place they want to be, to commune, to share.  It all comes from the interview.  So I take that very seriously.  I need time with my client, to ask them the pertinent questions, to see their reactions, to me, to each other, to my questions.  A lot can be said about particular reactions, I want to be taken seriously, I want them to take their garden seriously.  I get to spend their money, use their space, to sculpt into a garden they will call their very own.

I don’t think we take this as serious as we should.  It can be an extension of our house.  Here in California we have plenty of days, evenings, and mornings we could spend outside, enjoying a cup of coffee with the birds, flowers, nature.

Trust is huge, it’s something earned, once someone trusts you, you’re a step closer.  A step in the right direction.  It’s created in the interview through the communication, realization perhaps that this is a real job, a project to create a place for them.  I trust myself to design when I can write a few words about why I’m being included in this design, about the client, about the project.  Then I can work, start the process of design.  Taking all the clues, evidence from the interview and start putting the pieces into the design which creates shape in the space.

Just an early morning ramble…
